WHAT ARE THE CONSEQUENCES OF IGNORING THIS LAW IN QUEBEC? **
PENALTIES – The severity of the penalties for retailers / staff who break the law is well worth the investment of implementing programs to help increase compliance with the law:
RETAILERS/OWNERS
- First Offence: A fine of $500 to $2,000 and possibility of a one-month suspension of the tobacco sales licence
- Subsequent Offence: A fine of $1,000 to $6,000 and possibility of a six-month suspension of the tobacco sales licence
EMPLOYEES
- First Offence: A fine of $100 to $300
- Subsequent Offence: A fine of $200 to $600
LOSS OF INCOME
Three offences under the Act within a five-year period: Loss of the tobacco sales licence for a period of two years
